Quick Monday Post

Running in quick while dinner is cooking (probably ought to go start the rice in a minute) to get something up here. It's been a...well, a sorta busy week. I did a lot of sitting around and reading. I re-read a lot of stuff. Re-read Eileen Wilks' Blood Lines, re-read the 2nd and 3rd "Kitty" books, Kitty Goes To Washington and Kitty Takes a Holiday. I like them better than the 1st book, though I like it okay. But I also had a lot to keep me busy.

Sunday, we had folks over for Sunday dinner, and I cooked on Saturday. Cooked WAY too much roast beef spaghetti...but that's okay, because it freezes real nice. I need to tear up the last roast and stick it in the freezer. Jan left a pie for us to eat. Fortunately, it's a kind that the fella can eat, if he doesn't eat the crust.

Oh, and I tried a new recipe that anyone who likes Southwestern cuisine ought to like. It's polenta topped with black-eyed peas flavored with cilantro and tomato. I really liked it, and it was easy to make, since I bought packaged polenta. (Had to buy it in "the big city" but it was available there.) Kinda hushpuppy/tamale-ish, and since I like both hushpuppies and tamales, I liked the polenta.

There's a college music department concert tomorrow night. The community choir got invited to sing along, so I've been going to the noon choir rehearsals, and tonight is the dress rehearsal (though we don't have to dress, just show up and work out all the glitches). There are some fun songs. I've really enjoyed the challenge. Wish us luck. It should actually be a good concert. It's sounding good in practice.

And today I printed out the 1st 3 chapters of New Blood to start revising tomorrow. I won't be going to town tomorrow, so I ought to be able to get quite a bit done. I hope. I have my notes. Just need to keep hold of all the threads.

Ta-DAAAAA!!

I HAVE FINISHED THE BOOK!!!!

Yep. All the way from the very first page to the very last, with more scenes and background info than it needs, that I need to slice out, and not enough emotion which I'll need to add in. But It Is Done. The bad guys get theirs, the good guys get theirs, and I have all the scenes (and then some) I need. Now I have to type the sucker in.

And it's going to be too long, as usual. (sigh) But I have already IDed some things I can cut, so that will help. (I don't need that much exposition...)

Today, I took a break. I put receipts in my accounting program. I worked on my weekly and quarterly goals. (Okay, yeah, I know we're already into April, and it's Wednesday, not Monday, but I've been busy!) And then I read. Okay, I went to choir practice, except choir practice got cancelled, since the pianist couldn't be there, so I came home, and then I read.

Whoever it was that recommended Anne Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy, you were right. The books are Fabulous. I have been glomming onto Bishop this week. I ordered Belladonna (I had a coupon, so I bought it in hardback), and the 3-in-1 edition of The Black Jewels. I stayed up all night Saturday reading all three Black Jewels books one after the other. They were so wonderful. So this week, I bought the Dreams book, and another one called The Invisible Ring. Read them both already. Plus one by Vicki Pettersen that was pretty good, and I can't remember the title right off hand, but it's a debut novel and just out on the shelves.

Tomorrow, it's back to work for me. Typing the fingers to the bone. I'll probably just type in this week, and next week, work on revising the first three chapters again. I think now that I've finished the book, it will be easier to get the nuances right.

It's sorta like the portrait I'm attempting to paint. The tiniest change can make a huge difference. Hopefully, I can get the book right-er than the painting...

Back Around to Friday

I thought of all sorts of things to write about earlier this week, and never got here, and of course, I've now forgotten what any of those things were that I wanted to write about. So now, I have to just write about ...stuff.

This has been a good week writing. I'm really close to the end of the book--in the middle of the black moment--and got 37 pages written so far, which is really good for me. The fella wants to go to another auction tomorrow, and I have a few things I want to do in Amarillo tomorrow, so I'm going to go with him. I'm going to take the WiP with me, and the contest entries for a contest I've agreed to judge, so I'll be able to get some stuff done while at the auction. I hope.

I'm trying to learn how to do podcasts, so I'll be able to post some here, but so far I'm having trouble with the microphone. I can't seem to get it to work. (sigh) So I may go get me a new one. The mike worked with the old computer, but I'm not sure it's working with the new one. I need a new driver, maybe...

Been reading books too. Discovered a new author I like. I bought Anne Bishop's Sebastian, and loved it, so I picked up her new one, Belladonna, and it's really good too. So now I have a 3-in-1 trilogy of hers to read. Maybe I'll take it tomorrow too. But I really need to work.

Cuteness

We have some seriously cute grandboys. The oldest one is now in kindergarten and learning to write. And he addressed the envelope they just sent us (by means of their Wunka Bob who stopped off to visit before coming home for Easter). Not ALL the address, but our names.

It's kinda hard to mess up "Gigi"--but I am now married to "Granbaddy". We were amused. And we now have some seriously cute school pictures of the seriously cute boys. They called us to say Happy Easter last night. I'm amazed how well the little one talks. He won't be three till the end of the month, but he just chattered away on the phone.

Easter was very nice, but there were snowflakes falling when church let out. It did warm up a little bit today, which was good, with the boy heading back to school. (He got a speeding ticket--for shame!)

And today, I got 8 pages, and my hero got himself kidnapped. He didn't mean to get kidnapped, but you know how bad guys are. They do stuff. Bad stuff. These bad guys think they're the good guys...but don't bad guys often think that? Hopefully, the heroine will find him tomorrow.

White Easter??

Yes, we are having a white Easter. Or we will if the snow doesn't melt off any more. This is Texas. It's not supposed to snow after the iris bloom. (I've been afraid to look at them since it got so cold today.) But it's out there snowing.

Yesterday, we had Art Club. That's why I had to hike over to the Methodist church. Except I didn't hike, because I had a big casserole dish hot out of the oven to carry over. So I loaded up my car and drove the half block to the church, then I drove back and parked in my drive, and walked back to the church. Across the street, past the parsonage to the alley just beyond it, down the alley maybe 5 yards/meters and in the back door of the church. That's how far it is. Yes, I'm a wuss. But I had to carry a big sack full of pans of rolls (Sister Shubert rolls are Teh Best!) too.

Then at the end, it had started to drizzle and was very cold, and I only had on my suit jacket, which had no buttons, and I had a lot of stuff to carry back home, so I walked home, clutching my jacket closed to stay warm, and got my vehicle, drove back, double-parked in the alley to load up, and drove back home again. Yeah, I know. I'm bad.

As the youngest of the hostesses, I appointed myself head server, running plates into the lunching ladies while Fredie Jo and Ruth and Frances served them up. (Rhenda couldn't be there.) (And I ain't exactly a spring chicken...) Then we ate lunch, and an artist from the little town around our county lake gave a talk about art. (Hey, it's the Art Club.) She brought three of her Western realistic paintings and talked about composition and color and perspective and stuff. I enjoyed it a lot, because composition is something I struggle with. Of course, I prefer a more impressionistic style (I am just not a big detail person.) and I tend to do more still lifes and landscapes, but maybe there's a story in the paintings... She said she likes for all her paintings to tell stories. And she paints horses and Indians and cowboys without any kind of reference or model!!! Needless to say, I felt totally intimidated. (sigh) These are my horse pictures--the race picture is supposed to look blurry.

Then I came home and wrote. I was really excited about getting so much writing done Thursday, and I was excited about where the story was, and about getting that much closer to the ending, so I got 5 pages written Friday. Which made me happy. Because that made 33.5 pages on New Blood for the week, and my goal was 30 pages. I'm almost through the trial. Just need to have them dismiss the charges for lack of evidence. Then we'll be at the kidnapping.

The son is home for Easter. He wants to pick up his power tools and some other things to take back to Baylor. We went in to town this morning because he announced that he really needed some shorts (and of course wanted Mom and Dad to spring for them), and we were thinking we could get there and back before the snow got bad. (Which we did, since it isn't snowing now at all.) But it snowed on us while we were in Amarillo--just on the side of town where the mall is.

And Penney's was having a sale, so I bought 2 pairs of pants--they were on sale, and then if you used a Penney's card, they'd give you more off. So I bought a T-shirt and a skirt the fella found and thought would look good on me, too. I'm getting rid of all my fat pants. I still had a few pairs I've been wearing, but I haven't lost enough to go down another size, so I'm getting rid of the big ones anyway. But I needed a couple more pairs of the right size. Then we went to one of the Japanese "cook it in front of you" restaurants. I discovered that I like Monkey Balls. Still don't like most "regular" sushi, but I liked the Monkey Balls...

And now we're home again, and since the boy is off hanging with his friends, I'd like to pull together a little synopsis for Old Spirits. Wish me luck. :)

More progress

It's a good day. Okay, so I forgot that I was supposed to head over to the Methodist church this afternoon to help Fredie Jo and Ruth and Rhenda and somebody else decorate and set up for Art Club tomorrow, but hey, I got NINE (count 'em, 9!) pages written this morning.

In the same length of time it took me to write four (4) measly pages last week. Yayyy!!! (picture Kermit the frog running in circles waving his skinny green hands in the air, going Yayyyy.)(That's how I feel.)

Okay, nine pages isn't so much, when I have ninety pages left to go. But hey, if I can keep it up, in 10 days, I'll have the book finished. If 90 pages will get the rest of the scenes in. Actually, I'm probably already over my targeted word count. (sigh) But 9 pages is more than I've written on a single day in a very long time, and I'm happy.

We're just about to begin the actual trial. The 9 pages were working us into it, and getting the magic spell started. Now, the trial itself. Can't wait.

Though, since I have to make a potato casserole tomorrow, and hike myself and the casserole over to the Methodists by 11 a.m., I may start on this after choir tonight. We're starting some really cool spirituals. With hard alto parts. Fun!

But really, the book is getting totally cool.

The Writing Progresses--Again

Apparently I've used that as a title for my blog before. Sometimes that's all you can say. That the writing progresses. And it really is a very satisfying feeling, when it does.

I like to make scene lists, just note down the various scenes that need to take place, sometimes through the whole book, sometimes in a locale of the book. Then I get to mark off the scenes as I write them. That's the best feeling, though sometimes, I think--"Okay, I've written that scene. Why am I not to the next scene yet?" We will see if that's stuff that needs to be cut out later. I'm one of those who would rather overwrite and then cut away than have to add.

Anyway, I have written the love scene. In fact, I think I wrote two of them. (looks) Yep. Two. Okay, it took me a long time to get these people to this point, and I guess we all got a little excited. So that's all done, and now the bad guys have shown up again, and the heroine is getting arrested. We're on the fast track to the black moment and the end. Yayyyy!!!

Depending on how long it takes me to write the trial, and the kidnapping and the rescue and the grand denouement, I might be able to finish this by Tax Day!!

Smacked in the Head

Getting smacked in the head sounds painful, but it's not always bad.

This morning, while I was "snoozing," waiting for the phone to go off again (I hate lunging across the king-sized bed for the alarm on the other side, so I set my phone), I was smacked in the head by The Perfect First Sentence for a new story. And I had to get up and write it down. I wrote for 30 minutes, and got 2 pages. I just love it when that happens. :)

I'll have to make some notes and figure out further plot and stuff, but the idea's been churning around in my subconscious for the past 3 months while I've been working on finishing New Blood, so it's not hitting me cold...the hero of the new book is a secondary character in New Blood. So I've got him characterized, pretty much. (I originally cast Ralph Fiennes as this character, but he sorta morphed into Johnny Depp--more as he was in The Libertine than as Jack Sparrow...) I'm using the subplot I excised from NB as the main plot of the new hero's book. I just have to learn exactly who the heroine is, and what sort of magic she's best suited for. OH, and I came up with what I think is the perfect title. The new hero is a conjurer who works spirit magic, like the heroine in New Blood is a sorceress who works blood magic, so the new title is OLD SPIRITS. Yeah, I guess I'm excited a little bit...

I spent the day selling sausage wraps and breakfast burritos to the 2400 competitors (from 6th through 12th grade) in the judging contest the local community college sponsors. The Friends of the Library went to serve breakfast--and lunch. I ate one of each for my lunch. Yum. I had to get all my marshmallow treats for the sale made yesterday, so I could go with the fella to the estate auction in Amarillo.

The really good stuff was going up under the hammer today, so I didn't get the cool shamrock teapot or any of the neat things--last night they were just selling the box lots. My job is to say "Oooh, that looks cool, let's bid on that" and then sit in the chair and read my book and not look like I'm bidding. Last night, I read Her Perfect Life by Vicki Hinze--a FANTABULOUS book, and one of the Rita finalists. I'd already picked it up, and was meaning to read it when the Rita nominations came out, so that just made me read it sooner. Loved it.

We bought a box of copper stuff, and a box of boxes (mostly jewelry boxes, but there was a Silver Jubilee biscuit tin from 1935 and a really weird rawhide earring tree thing, and a cool inlaid mosaic-type box that was the one I really wanted for me), and three boxes of books that had Tarot decks in them. I read Tarot, so I wanted the boxes with the decks. And the one with Hopi legends--there was a lot of New Age-y stuff that will be good for research, and some Santa Fe art catalogs. Oh, and we got a couple of rolling file cabinet things for $10 each. Not bad. No idea where we'll put the file box things, but... I have stuff to fill them up. And then I got to eat dinner at the Texas Roadhouse. It's really noisy, but we like the food.

Varieties of Working

When I come into my office to write, I say I'm Working. In fact, in my "labels" for this post, when I put "work" up, that means the writing. Because I am a full time writer.

And it is tiring to sit and write. I do my first drafts in longhand, remember, so there's a little handcramp to deal with, and there's always the dreaded fanny fatigue. Sometimes, if my thumbnail gets a bit long, it digs into my forefinger as I'm holding the pen. And that doesn't even count the mental exhaustion. Or the tendency to slump into slumber...but that usually doesn't hit unless I try to write in the afternoon.

I've been writing a love scene this week. Or trying to. For some reason, love scenes seem to take me forever to write. It's not that I don't like writing them, or reading them either, but they're just hard to write. I mean, it's the same basic act every time, only the characters differ from book to book...and sometimes they don't. Sometimes, they're the same characters...but they're in a different place in their lives. And that's the only thing that's really, essentially different. But you have to make each love scene different, anyway. Because they're different people at different points in life, and ... and I have really had trouble getting into this particular love scene.

Every time I think I'm getting it finally underway, the heroine comes up with some NEW problem, some Other difficulty that is messing up her head, and frankly, she's as frustrated as I am. I think I have finally solved ALL her problems, and we're going to get some nookie going...but I have diabolical plans, and I know what will happen when things finally cut loose a little, and they're going to have to get into yet another conversation before they can get back to business. Monkey business, that is. And then they can do magic.

But that wasn't really what I was going to write about when I started this. See, I went out and pulled weeds again yesterday. And I was so tired and so sore, I fell asleep after supper and almost didn't wake up in time for choir practice--and the concert is this Sunday. (I'm wearing my new pink-and-black jacket.) And there are still way too many stickery thistle-dandelion things. (They're not really dandelions, because they're stickery, but they have yellow flowers, and make puffball seedheads, so...) I don't think any have bloomed yet. Maybe I can stay ahead of them. I'm not pulling weeds today. I'm getting a blister on my right palm from the trowel, and it's cold and rainy outside. Today, I'm going to be lazy. So there. :)

Sprung Spring

Spring has exploded in the rolling plains. Winter hung on and on and on--and then all of a sudden, kablooey! It's spring.

The daffodils came and went so quickly, I missed them, and I've already got iris blooming. I mention this, because I finally went out and worked in the front flower bed this afternoon, pulling up those giant thistle things and volunteer elm trees that I missed last year. And I only got one corner of the bed, the one under my office window that has horrible heavy clay dirt that turns rock hard when it dries out, and is overrun with Bermuda grass. (Which I HATE. Hate, Hate, HATE.) And now my shoulders are killing me even more than they were before I went out to pull weeds. And I have the whole rest of the flower bed to pull the thistles and elm trees out of. (sigh)

But the sage is coming back really strong and the iris are putting up lots of buds, and the roses are leafing out nicely (need to replace a rose that died with one of the ones we put in pots--I think the other potted one may die before spring gets too much more advanced...) and the lilies are coming up. Lots of work to do, so I can't slack off. I'll be getting different exercise in this week.

I only got 4 pages written today, even though I spent my 3 hours at the work. I ran smack bang into a love scene. I wasn't ready for it, so I finally quit and went off to think about it. I know what needs to happen, but I need to figure out how to get into it. My characters are always too dad-gum talky. (sigh again) Tomorrow the love scene. I shall prevail!

Blogging

I have signed into Blogger at least three times this week, intending to blog, and never got anything written. I did manage to blog this week, but this was three other times I came here to blog again, and never did.

I even had some things to write about. Like, how when I walked down to the bank this week, the librarian saw me heading back (the library is half a block down the street from the bank), and came out and hollered at me to come sign something. I had to sign something to send in to the State Library people. Or maybe the federal Library people. I don't know. I did read it, but I don't remember who it was for. I'd forgotten that she called me last week or so and asked whether I was the president of the Library Advisory Board.

I knew I was on the board, but had no clue whether I was the president or not. I've been on it for over a year, and we've met once. And when Jerri Ann said she thought I was the new president, I said, fine, I'll be the president. Only now she tells me we need to meet and come up with a policy for the kids' computer use at the library once school is let out. Sigh. And one of our board members lives way out of town past a couple of slidy hills and some low-water crossings and can't get to town if it's raining, so of course it's been storming all week...

This is like when I agreed to be the vice president for the Friends of the Library, because I wouldn't have to do very much. Then we discovered that we had to completely split the Friends from the Advisory Board, and the president of FoL went over to be an Advisor, and I got to be the President of FoL--and that was when the treasurer discovered that we really needed to fill out the official IRS paperwork to become an official non-profit organization (even though we barely fundraise $500 per year), AND we needed to re-do our bylaws to make them fit with the IRS papers. Sigh. This always happens to me.

I did remember to go to community choir practice this week. It was sounding pretty good when the second soprano showed up so us altos weren't drowning out the only soprano who was there for most of rehearsal. Oh well. Performance is Palm Sunday. AKA this coming Sunday. Hopefully, whatever's making the gunk in my throat will die and I can sing all those Fs without getting rattly. For some reason, an F (the low one--I haven't been able to hit a high F in 25 years)(I can only hit a high E when the sun is shining, all allergens are dead and the birds are singing sweetly in the trees. E-flat is generally possible.) shakes loose all the gunk in my throat, when there is gunk, and makes me cough. It's not where the voice breaks--that's somewhere around an A or B--it's just the gunk vibration note. (And I'm sure y'all really wanted to know all that...)

The daughter made an A in her probability class for her statistics PhD. The younger son made a 99 on his engineering test. (This after majoring in theater performance and theater design for 3 semesters before switching to engineering.) We haven't heard from the older son in a while. Hmm. So, life is mostly good.

Oh, and today, we went to town and bought half-price ready made frames for a couple of paintings, and put them up in the son's room. They look pretty good, if I say so myself. It all started when we moved out the old broken-down dresser and moved in this antique chest/armoire/desk thing (it has drawers, a door where you can hang up things, and a pull-down writing area). Then I brought in one single painting (see above) to see how it looked over the armoire/desk--and the fella said to bring out all the paintings-ready-to-hang, and we found two more that looked good. We put the "Breakfast in Tuscany" painting over the chest/desk and the one above across the room, and a big "boys at the beach" painting above the bed, but to one side, not over the headboard. Yeah, we started something.

Procrastination

Yes, I am one of those people who, if you look up procrastination in the dictionary, will be pictured there. I am the queen--nay, the Empress of Procrastination! At least when it comes to blogging on my own blog.

Okay, I have excuses. Like, I left town. And then when I came back the computer was still in the shop. For the rest of the whole week. But I could have blogged. I could have used to backup computer, even if it doesn't have any bookmarks to find places, and I'm not sure I even have the e-mail set up. I could have done it. But I procrastinated. I read. I read and read and read.

I also wrote. I learned a long time ago that if I want to get all the way to the end of a book, I need to Write First. So I came into my office and wrote every morning last week. Some days I only got 2 pages done, but I got them done. I need to remember the No excuses mantra. I want to finish the book this month. I'm getting close to the end. And unexpected things are still happening, so it's all good. But I need to get more than 6 pages in 3 hours.

Anyway, that's where I've been, and that's where I'm at. Oh, I'm all excited. C.E. Murphy (of Urban Shaman fame) got an advanced reader copy of Eternal Rose and she wrote me this wonderfully incoherent e-mail all about how much she loved it. If you've ever met Catie, you will understand how wonderfully incoherent she can get about all sorts of things. So it was nice that my book was one of them. I'm all happy.

Off to sleep now. After writing time in the a.m., will go let the dermatologist look at my skin cancers tomorrow (WEAR SUNSCREEN!!!) and see how they're doing with the cream treatment. Then I will go paint. I drew off a picture of one of the grandboys I love, so I'm going to give it a whirl. If I can successfully paint three portraits that don't suck, I may donate one to Brenda Novak's diabetes auction fundraiser next year. This is number two. Wish me luck.

Books, Books, Books

I came home Sunday evening from the 80th birthday party weekend for the fella's dad and looked at the letter included in the second panel of Rita contest books I agreed to read...and discovered that I had until Wednesday (IOW, today) to read them all. Seven of them. By today.

Fortunately, none of them were massive tomes, so I was able to get through them fairly quickly. But I have been reading madly since Sunday evening. I read two Sunday night, two on Monday, one yesterday, and the last two today. And yes, I read them with full comprehension and can tell you what each of them was about. But I'm not going to because they are contest entries, and it's a secret.

I think I'm kind of taking this week off from the writing, which is risky, because I really want to finish the book by the end of the month. So I'm typing it in instead, and doing my first edit/revision. I'd like to get 50-60 pages in by Friday. I'm heading to Waco fairly early on Friday, for the workshop I'm doing (finished it today) and the booksigning at Books-a-Million.

Oh yeah, I'm doing a book signing at Books-a-Million in Waco on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. Hope it goes well. I've done absolutely no PR for it, but one of the other ladies participating has done quite a bit. So...

I'm ready to be home for a while. We've been gone the last two weekends, and the fella's been gone for at least a couple of nights during the week for the past month.

I got an envelope from the agent with suggestings & critique about the last couple of things I've sent her, and now I'm going through the thinking part of my response. It takes me a while to think about what people suggest/say about my writing, whether it's a critique partner, an agent, an editor, or whoever. Most of the time, what they ask about is something I'm aware of, and thought I had in there, but it's obviously not clear, or not clear enough. So now I have to figure out how to make it clear.

And I have discovered that I really don't like a lot of description in the books I read (and thus in the books I write). Sometimes I want to know about the clothes, but not every single stinkin' time, and not in any great massive detail. Nor do I want to know about the furniture or the architecture, in great detail, which is why it's hard for me to put in enough to suit other people. That happy medium is hard to find.

Anyway, I'm here. I'm heading off again. (The workshop is on The Plotter/Pantser Hybrid, or, Whatever Works for You is Right.) And I'll be back again on Sunday, hopefully without a big stack of books I have to read in a hurry. (Though I still have one to read for a different contest, but I have till April on that one...which is good, because it is a massive tome...)

Long-Term Spending Habits

I got in a conversation the other day with ... the fella, I think it was. We were talking about music and "oldies" and what music we had and liked back in the day--when we were in junior high and high school.

These days, the "must have" tech is an iPod or similar MP3 player. Back then, it was a portable record player, or for the really rich kids, a stereo. (This is pre-boombox days, folks. I'm old) And instead of a playlist, my friends had stacks of .45 rpm records. Singles.

I owned one. That's right. One lone .45 rpm single. (Dedicated to the One I Love by The Mamas and the Papas) And our ... you can't call it a stereo. It was an old cabinet-style radio with a turntable in the top. It was the equivalent of having one song on an old ... Walkman. Maybe. It's not so much that I was impoverished, though with multiple siblings and a dad with a college prof's salary, I didn't have a whole lot of disposable income. It's just that I chose to spend my money on different things.

This was the moment of epiphany. Because when I considered what I spent my disposable income on back in my high school days, I realized that it is exactly the same as what I spend my disposable income on Today. I buy books, and I buy earrings.

I have two massive piles of books in my office, and a rapidly growing pile on the table behind the recliner in the den of books I've read since the new year that I don't want to mix with the books I read Last Year. I don't just buy books. I buy BOOKS. Lots, and lots and lots of books. I buy books almost every week, three or four or five at a time. (I think I bought 5 at Target this week...) (Some weeks I'll get a couple at Target and 3 or 4 more at Barnes & Noble.) (Hmm. I bought those books at Target on Tuesday, and today I ordered 4 more at B&N online...) (And I just got a second panel of books to read for RWA's RITA contest.) (Hello, my name is Gail and I'm a bookaholic.)

And I buy earrings. I have an extensive earring wardrobe. I've become a bit more discerning in my earring purchases in the last...mumbledy-something years. (I'm a grandmother. You do the math.) But I own a pair of balsa-wood parrot-in-turquoise-straw-hat earrings, and I would snap up a pair of lady-bug earrings like I had when I was in high school in a New York minute. (I also have garnets, lots of Navajo silver, silver from Norway, turquoise slabs, green amber...lots of stuff.) I'm a sucker for cool earrings.

There are other things I tend to spend my money on. Office supplies--I can get all oogly over pens and notebooks. Yarns and fabric for crafting and quilting. Paint supplies. Flowering plants--indoors or out. Books about crafting and quilting and painting and gardening...though that's back to the books, isn't it? Thing is--all those things go back years and years and years too. I bought my first African violet when I started college. I learned to sew in high school. I took oil painting lessons in high school. And of course, I was writing things in notebooks. (Fan fiction for the original Star Trek, and for High Chaparral, which you trivia buffs may know something about.)

I haven't outgrown my addictions. I've just become better funded.

Oh, and I'm still writing. We'll be in Paris for the rest of the book.

ISBN for THE ETERNAL ROSE

One of My Lovely MySpace friends told me that they pre-ordered The Eternal Rose from Amazon.com today. (Or maybe yesterday. Time is relative in cyberspace.) Anyway, I was totally shocked and thrilled, since I hadn't known until then that the books were available for pre-order. (Yay!!)

ISBN stands for something blah like "International Standard Book Number" (which might be right, or might not, because I'm totally guessing) but that is what makes a book "real." It's not the paper or the cover, tho those totally help in the "real"-making, but e-books, which have covers and type, but no paper, have ISBNs. The ISBN identifies the book to the public, and to bookstores and to anybody who wants to know about a book. Two books can have the same cover. Two authors can have the same name (which is frowned upon, but happens). Many, many books have the same plots. (FYI, there are only 16 plots. Or maybe only three. Depends on who you ask.)

But no book will ever, ever, ever have the same ISBN. It identifies one book and one book only. MINE. What is this secret number, you ask? Well, first of all, it's NOT a secret. (Share this news with your friends.) And secondly, there are actually two numbers. There are so many books, the ISBN people are switching from a 10-digit number to a 13-digit number.

That said, Here they are:
  • ISBN-10: 080957165X

  • ISBN-13: 978-0809571659

Go forth and pre-order. If you want to.

Oh, and I'll be posting a pre-pre-order excerpt from the book for my newsletter sometime next month, probably (depending on when I can remember to do it, and if I don't, nag me, 'kay?), so if you're not signed up for the newsletter and you want to be, send me an e-mail with "Subscribe" in the subject line, and I'll sign you up.

Dadgum! It's COLD!!!

I was going to do a blog about Maureen Dowd and her cluelessness, but I've never been able to read Dowd anyway (Oh, how I miss Molly Ivins! She's the only one who really ever got Texas politics) and we all know she needs a great big giant clue, so forget about her. I just want to get WARM.

We finally got the snow/ice melted off our back patio, and it decides to snow again. And get really, really cold. It's gotten warm enough to melt some of it off, especially off the streets, so I haven't had to do the 4-wheel drive thing, but it only stays that warm till for about 15 minutes, then gets cold again. Ugh. This time last year, my tulips were coming up. It snowed all morning yesterday, and most of the morning today. Good writing weather.

I actually got 7 pages written today, the most all week, but still not as many as I wanted. I may reach Paris soon. In fact, I'm hoping to get everyone there tomorrow. Cross your fingers.

I should have re-potted my plants this afternoon--I bought the potting soil so I could do it--but didn't get there. I went to the college basketball games, but missed the end of the women's game and the beginning of the men's because I went to community choir. All ladies tonight, but at least there was more than me and the director this time. (I forgot completely last week...) It was fun to sing, but I rusted the voice out doing it and didn't cheer at the ball game at all. I clapped really loud, tho.

Just agreed to write an article for the Published Authors RWA chapter website. Got to do that by Monday. Now, if I can get any revisions for Eternal Rose from my editor, I may have my ducks in a row.

Um--another painting. I think I finished this one last August or September. I painted it from this photo I took.

Let's see...I went on a reading binge earlier this week. I read Blood Bound by Patricia Briggs, Let There Be Suspects by Emilie Richards (a cute mystery with a minister's wife heroine), Catching Stanley by Deirdre Martin (hockey playing hero, neurotically shy dog trainer heroine), Howling Moon by C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp, (hero's a werewolf, heroine's a shapshifting jaguar with a serial killer jaguar after her), and Maelstrom by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Moon (living planet that's evolving the people and beings living on it). Hmm. No wonder I'm not getting much written this week. Reading too much...

Slow weekend

It's been a really slow weekend. We talked about getting tickets for the Sousa concert at the Amarillo Symphony, but when the fella had trouble getting home from Austin, it's just as well we didn't. Amarillo was socked in with fog and freezing drizzle most of the morning and early afternoon. He's been spending a lot of time in Austin, because the Texas legislature is meeting. They only meet for a few months every other year and all the business has to be done very quickly--the theory was that if they didn't meet too often, they couldn't cause too much trouble--and being in the junior college business, the fella feels the need to be present to make sure the gummint doesn't forget to fund the colleges. (They only pay for about 1/3 of the cost of running them, right now...but this isn't a government or educational blog).) Anyway, it means that for the next several months, he'll be in Austin almost as much as he's at home. And it's nice when he comes home again. :)

We spent the weekend just hanging out. We watched a couple of the movies I rented to watch while he was gone, and didn't watch at all. I read a book. We changed lightbulbs--this is a complicated process that involves getting out a ladder (high ceilings) and lots of cussing, so we tend to let a lot of lightbulbs burn out before we go round changing them. And okay, he does most of the work. I stand by ready to catch him in case the ladder wobbles, and throw away the old lightbulbs. But we replaced three of the four bulbs in the den, two of the three lights in the spare room, the light in the laundry room, one of the bathroom lights and... surely there was another one--oh yeah, one of the 4 bulbs on the ceiling fan fixture in our bedroom. (Told ya we wait till we're fumbling in the dark.) We can see again! (I really like the fluorescent fixtures in the bathrooms...)

I'm going to have to start going to basketball games with him again soon--except this week, it's on Thursday, which is choir night--okay, I completely forgot to go to the community choir this past week, but the fella was out of town, and it's harder to remember stuff when I don't have any schedule at all to keep... Anyway, I can go to the ball game, then sneak out for choir practice, then sneak back for the rest of the guys' game.

I've made an emergency hair cut appointment for tomorrow afternoon. I need to make myself a big sign to put on my desk so I don't forget to go. We're getting a family picture made early Tuesday morning, and my hair has reached that icky in-between too-long-to-be-short and too-short-to-be-long stage, where some of it wants to flip out, some of it wants to flip under, and some of it sorta wants to go sideways...(No I do not have photos!) and no way am I having my picture made with in-between hair...

I need to write a "alumnus success story" article for Gwen Shuster-Haynes' marketing workshop. I'm not sure it got me to doing more things that what I was already doing, but I feel better about the things I'm accomplishing, and I think I'm focused better.

Okay. This weekend, I watched Sixteen Blocks with Bruce Willis (liked it), and Mrs. Henderson Presents with Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. I also read Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, and Tongue in Chic by Christina Dodd. (Dodd's title doesn't seem to have anything to do with the story, but it's cute, and I liked the book. I liked both books, actually.)

Back to work in the a.m.

Nothing new

Nothing much has happened since yesterday, except I did finally get boxes and stuff to mail out the goodies to the winners of the contest I held for my newsletter subscribers. They're all ready to mail and sitting stacked in the den.

Didn't call my sister for her birthday yesterday... (Happy Birthday Cathy!!) Didn't repot my plants which are all sitting with the new pots on the kitchen counters. I really ought to do that tomorrow. Never did get tickets to the Sousa concert the Amarillo Symphony is having. I guess I'm not as productive as I thought I was...except I did get lots of stuff mailed.

So now, I'm going to post another one of the paintings I finally took pictures of. I finished this one around Thanksgiving...

Staying busy

I finished a new painting last night. I carried it out onto the patio (which is finally almost melted off, after a month of snow & ice back there) to photograph it --along with the others I hadn't got round to taking pictures of. I'm really proud of how it turned out... Even if I did trace it with an opaque projector--it doesn't look like paint-by-numbers. Now I have to find photos of the other kids to paint...

Been mailing a lot of stuff lately, clearing the decks to get back to finishing a manuscript. I sent the revised synopsis for the Victorian steampunk fantasy I'm working on to my agent on Monday. Yesterday, I mailed off a couple of contest entries. Today, I finished revisions on a dark-ish paranormal and will be getting that in the mail this afternoon. Hopefully the editor will get back to me soon on any revisions wanted for The Eternal Rose. Until then, I'll be getting back to finishing the Victorian, New Blood.

Oh, I finished Kristi Gold's new book, Fall From Grace, last night--read it all in one huge gulp. Fabulous book--one I think she was born to write, and I know she's been wanting to write it for a long time. Wonderful, heartwarming story.

Let's see, what else do I have to tell you? The lump on my wrist is what was once known as a "Bible cyst" (aka a ganglion cyst) because once upon a time, to treat it, you'd lay your arm/wrist out on a table and get somebody to thump it hard with a big Bible and pop it. As long as it doesn't get to really hurting bad, I guess I'll just leave it be.

Super Sunday

Fixing to go to a Sunday school party at the local doctor's house (there's only one in town) for the Super Bowl. Spent the afternoon making Marshmallow Treats and Chex Mix. Since the fella's allergic to all wheat stuff, I leave out the wheat Chex and pretzels and bagel chips and just put in lots and lots of rice & corn chex, and extra nuts. We like it. :)

I have my Victorian synopsis all ready to send off to the agent. Spent Friday trying to condense my WWII story down to a 2-page synopsis. I had to put it into Times New Roman to get it down that short, but it works.

Only contests are that strict about length. Yeah, I'm going to enter this in a contest--it's a totally new genre for me--historical, non-romance. The Panhandle Professional Writers of Amarillo's Frontiers in Writing contest is a good all-genre contest for everything from poetry to screenplays to non-fiction articles, with cash prizes, and the only publication requirement is that the manuscript entered has not been contracted for publication. You can have other stuff published. So I'm entering. I have to finish the revisions on the entry pages, and get it mailed off by the end of the month.

I also have to finish judging three more contest entries, and read one more book for the RITA awards. I guess those are my goals for next week. Get my pages revised and get the contest entered. Finish all the judging.

And I have to go back to the doctor yet again. The neck lump is shrinking, but when we went to the high school basketball games Friday night--last district games of the season--and when I was clapping and hollering for the kids, this...thing that feels like a bone...came sprangling out of my wrist. I have yet another weird lump--this one's under the skin right at the base of my thumb. I tell ya, I'm getting tired of this lump/spot business! Oh well. At least I can still type...
